Leave innovation to private firms

Re: Where Is Canada's Plan For The Digital Age?, Marc Garneau, Feb. 2.

In typical Liberal fashion, Marc Garneau argues that without the government's efforts, technological advancement will stagnate. Let me remind Mr. Garneau that Microsoft, Google, Verizon, Apple, Shaw, etc., are not government-run agencies. They are private companies responsible for the vast majority of technological innovation in the world. Government involvement simply distorts the market and balloons the deficit which, in the long run, harms the very companies responsible for the innovation due to higher taxes.

There is a reason why there hasn't been any technological advancements coming from Cuba and North Korea. Let's not go down that road.

Craig Smith, Calgary.
